ANDY Robinson from the Chesterfield Canal Trust has applied for a grant from the Aviva Community Fund for an archaeological dig in Staveley next August.

If the Trust gets the grant, the dig will run for a fortnight and will be open for anyone to join in and help. A professional archaeologist will be in charge.

Hidden cuckoo boat

The dig will take place on the site of the former Bellhouse Canal Basin at the Bottom of Bellhouse Lane in Staveley. It's possible that a Cuckoo boat, unique to the Chesterfield Canal, might be found. One is alleged to have sunk in the basin and eventually to have been buried.

However, for all this to happen, Andy needs lots of votes for the project because it is a competition.

Vote online

You have to vote online by searching for Aviva Community Fund, clicking on Vote Now and typing Cuckoo into the Search project titles box. You will then be able to read Andy's full submission and watch his video appeal. It explains how you can vote for the project.

Voting closes on 18th November.

Andy reamarks:

"Please vote for our project and help us secure the funds we need to build an amazing, educational and exciting community event in Staveley!"
