The word 'towpath' took on a very different meaning recently when a car stranded on the Mon & Brec towpath had to be towed-off.

But the Ford Fiesta was in such a precarious position with two of its wheels hanging over the waterway that it finished by being craned off the towpath, Chris Gibson tells us.

Quarter of a mile

The 80 years old lady driver obviously took a wrong turn, driving a quarter of a mile along the towpath in broad daylight, then two of her car's wheels dropped over the side of the waterway and brought the vehicle to a standstill.

Luckily the driver did not step out of her car from the driver's side, otherwise she would have been in the waterway, but had the sense to scramble over the centre and let herself out of the passenger door.

Few yards further

If she had gone just a few yards further and under the narrow towpath under the bridge, the car would most likely have ended up in the canal.

The police were called by someone living in a nearby house, with the car eventually being lifted of the towpath onto a nearby bridge.
