TWO statements are a bit worrying, writes Bill Ridgeway:
'The Trust in fact tell us that 'major structural repairs' are required to get the lock back in working condition' and 'No doubt, once again, it will be the Trust that has to foot the bill whilst the person causing the damage and of course upsets to people's holidays will carry on scot free, possibly causing more damage...'.
Do we know the condition?
A picture is painted of the steerer of the boat being totally responsible for causing major structural damage. Do we know the condition of the lock and gate before the strike?
If, at the other end of the scale CaRT had allowed the lock and gate to be in a very poor condition a light strike may be all that was needed to tip the balance. The truth is somewhere between the two extremes and it would be good to check facts before rushing to point an accusing finger.
