Canal 'on' again

THE restoration of the Wilts and Berks Canal through Swindon has been on and off many times, as regular readers of narrowboatworld will have learned, but at the moment it is 'on' once again.

It seems the residents objected to the 'off' previously decided, for they plumbed for the canal going through the town centre, that was previously vetoed, Alan Tilbury reveals.

The majority of the residents consulted wanted the canal reinstated in the masterplan for the town centre, after it was shown going only as far as a basin, but not linking up with the further restoration.

The new draft plan will go before the full council in April, and the support for the canal being fully reinstated will be dealt with.
