Canal buildings restored

MANY canal buildings along the Scottish waterways have suffered years of neglect, but many are soon to be restored under the Heritage Strategy being drafted by Scottish Canals

Such buildings include Telford House, next to the Neptune's Staircase Locks on the Caledonian Canal and  Bona Lighthouse, on the northern shores of Loch Ness. Though claimed as the only inland lighthouse in Britain, it is not, with another on the Norfolk Coast.

Other neglected buildings include the Isle of Arran Brewery on the Forth & Clyde Canal and a 19th century building thought to have functioned as a lighthouse on the Crinan Canal.

In addition to preserving buildings, the new strategy includes such as a steel lighter barge recovered from the bed of the Forth & Clyde Canal at Pinkston Basin.
