Car rescued from canal

IT TOOK British Waterways staff over three hours to rescue a car from the Rochdale Canal at Walsden on the East of the summit pound late last week.

It seems it was dumped, as an underwater team called to the scene found no people in the car, Alan Tilbury tells us.

During the night

It had been driven into the waterway during the night, as it was first seen by a passer by just after 6am, who called the police, who in turn alerted the underwater team.

Firefighters and British Waterways staff joined forces to pull the vehicle, a Citroën Xsara, using a winch and digger, from the middle of the waterway, with just its roof showing.
