Canal death a mystery

AT THE inquest into the death of Wayne Branson, who was found dead in Nottingham Canal in September of last year, the coroner stated it will remain a mystery.

It was early one September morning that his body was found floating in the water just above Castle Lock on the waterway in Nottingham, Alan Tilbury reports.

Obviously drunk

At the inquest it was stated that the 57 years old man had high levels of alcohol in his blood, and was obviously drunk, but there was no exact evidence of the events leading to his death, though it was discovered that he had been drinking in the  Water's Edge pub for two hours when his brother left him, but that Wayne stayed drinking for a further four hours, leaving at 4pm.

It was told he was arguing with other drinkers, was told to calm down, and subsequently escorted away by one of the managers.

Unsure of his movements

None of the men he was seen arguing with left the pub until two hours after Wayne was seen leaving on CCTV, but the police were unsure of his movements after this, though staff and people in the surrounding area had been interviewed.

Recording an open verdict, Nottinghamshire Coroner Mairin Casey told that it was a mystery, as there is no exact evidence of what happened or indeed no clear link to Wayne's movements between 8pm in the evening and him being found in the canal, though he may have gone to another pub, though it is known that he had been drinking heavily.
