Email: National Trust take over CART?

Published: Monday, 19 December 2011

The looming imposition of the Canal & River Trust as the principal navigation authority for England & Wales is being presented to us by British Waterways as a fait accompli.

As such, casting around for alternatives may verge on fantasy. Nonetheless, I note that there is already a large well established ‘third sector body' in charge of some of our waterways: since 1964 and 1968, the National Trust has had control of the Wey and the Godalming Navigations respectively.

Do your readers consider the National Trust has made a good job of maintaining these over half a century? And if so, might they be considered a reliable pair of hands to take on more of the network?
