A GROUP, calling itself the Stafford Riverway Link, has been formed  in an attempt to reopen the Stafford Branch Canal.

The aim in to reopen the disused 1½ mile link between the town and the Staffs & Worcs Canal, (the photograph shows where the branch connected with the canal at Baswich) and have been given £2,000 from the Inland Waterways Association.

Campaign

The new association have started a campaign to get signatures supporting the reopening of the branch, that was a combined river and canal waterway, using the Sow, but was closed in 1929, with little left.

A spokesman for the Stafford Riverway Link, explained:

"We are now hoping to re-open it for leisure purposes, like fishing, cycling, walking and boating."

The branch was built purposely for the transportation of coal from the local collieries.
