Don't moor under trees

GOOD advice in a gale is not to moor under a tree, which one boater ignored to his regrets.

The gale force winds of yesterday (Thursday) created havoc on the waterways as trees and branches came down, with boaters moored beneath them discovering it was not the thing to do, Alan Tilbury reveals.

Came down

One boater found out to his distress when a tree came down on his boat as it was moored beneath it on the Market Harborough Arm of the Grand Union Canal, and it was only the efforts of British Waterways that eventually released his boat.

There are reports of many other boats suffering similar fates as the gales continued across the country, bringing down trees and branches onto boats.

The advice of course is not to moor in the vicinity of trees when a gale is blowing.  Many trees, particularly on sloping canal banks have little purchase with their roots, and are soon uprooted.
