IT IS nearing Halloween time, so again the Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre is preparing itself for a busy week as it gets its grim reaper tunnel trips ready.

For those that can hold their nerve there will be a chance to venture into the highest, longest, deepest and ‘eeriest' canal tunnel in the country, for a  quest to find ghosts, ghouls and all things creepy.

Grizzly incidents

After the canal network was built by hand more than 200 years ago, the  many more grizzly incidents, have left their ghostly mark on the waterways, and Standedge Tunnel has its fair share.

James Dean, Visitor Services Manager for Standedge Tunnel & Visitor Centre, explains:

"Halloween's one of our most popular times of year as our visitors love a trip into the tunnel to enjoy the spooky atmosphere. Our expert guides are great at telling stories about the tunnel's history which keep everyone on the edge of their seats. We always look to put on some family friendly events during the school holidays to keep the kids entertained so it's a perfect way to keep them occupied during half term."

Halloween trail

The spooky trips will be running between Saturday 22nd and Sunday 30th October. Kids will also be able to take part in a fun and interactive Halloween trail around the Standedge site.

During the second half term weekend a craft fair will be held in the visitor centre, giving local artists the opportunity to display their arts and crafts. Visitors can treat themselves between 10am and 4pm, with free entry.
