A HISTORIC lock gate workshop in Bilston is giving the public a rare opportunity to see first-hand the work that goes into making and repairing canal lock gates.

Bradley workshop, at the end of Bradley Arm on the Birmingham Canal Navigations, is opening its doors on Friday 15th April to give the public the opportunity to see behind the scenes at one of only two remaining British Waterways lock gate workshops.

Get up close

Visitors will be able to get up close to the English Oak gates at different stages of construction and speak to the skilled craftsmen that build each gate.

Janet Carter, Workshop Manager for British Waterways, explained:

"The open day will be a great opportunity for visitors to gain an understanding of the work that goes in to keeping our 200 years old network of canals moving. Members of the public will be able to see where the lock gates are painstakingly crafted as well as chatting to the skilled carpenters and joiners who create each one by hand.

"We hope that by opening up the workshop to visitors we will be able to show them the work taking place on their doorstep to preserve the area's magnificent industrial heritage for future generations to enjoy."
