ON A BATH TUNNEL ON THE Kennet & Avon Canal workers broke through leaving a hole in its roof.

It is possibly having a shield to cover the hole, Keith Gudgin reports.

This was at Bath No. 1 Tunnel, with it now closed to navigation as it is not sure of the tunnel's safety.

It was while workers were excavating the road bridge surface over the tunnel that stones were dislodged and one dropped through leaving a hole in its roof.

Allow navigation

But now Bath & North East Somerset Council are proposing to install a temporary shield around the damaged area of the tunnel to allow navigation to be reopened until a more permanent repair design can be formulated.

The navigation and towpath however will remain closed until this is completed then a decision will be made as to the tunnel's safety for navigation.
