OVER THE PAST couple of days the recent storms have caused major disruption to the waterways.
With the trust full-out clearing more than 60 trees blocking the waterways, Keith Gudgin reports.
Created havoc
The strong wind coupled with the heavy rains have created havoc, with not only the vast number of falling trees but the heavy rain causing rising water levels and many boats breaking from their moorings and drifting away.
The major problem was that as one storm died away another began, leaving the workers of Canal & River Trust flat-out in their efforts to clear the waterways and makes the navigations safe.
Together with the trust's teams, contractors and local partners and boaters lending a hand to clear the trees to allow navigation.
It was not only the rivers that were flooding but canal pounds too, this causing the boats breaking away and stranded and even reports of sinkings.
Failures with control systems
As well as all this, the storms have caused failures with power and control-systems at sluices and flood control structures.Â
It will be a worrying time for boaters indeed should this now become the norm.
