THE GRANTHAM CANAL has suffered a bad leak with water pouring out.

This is affecting businesses in the town, Janet Friend reports.

It is so bad that it is causing damage to a road and it is afraid that it could turn into a breach unless work is quickly undertaken to stop the flow of water from the canal.

Very heavy rain

The leak occurred after very heavy rain that put undue pressure on to the bank of the waterway causing the leak.

It is expected that major work will be required to stop the flow of water and prevent an actual breach from happening on the waterway.

It has been stated by Grantham Council that the works, costing £206,000, is part of a five years programme of work on the waterway.

Part of this programme will be measures to enable better management of water levels.
