A NEW BRIDGE is nearly ready to be lifted over the Trent in Nottingham in November.

The bridge, the first in Nottingham for over 60 years, is scheduled to be lifted on the 19th November, Janet Friend reports.

NottinghamBridgeFor pedestrians and cyclists

Named the  Waterside Bridge it is 278 feet long, and when in place will link Trent Basin in the city to Lady Bay in Rushcliffe, it being for pedestrians and cyclists, and is expected to be lifted into place with the largest crane in Europe that will be assembled on site.

The crane will first be transported to the site using a total of 63 lorries, that it is stated when erected will 'absolutely dominate the skyline'.

Viewing spaces to see the crane lifting the bridge into place will be provided for the public to see this 'once in a lifetime' spectacle.

Suspension wires to be installed

The Waterside Bridge is 13 feet wide, which will allow both pedestrians and cyclists to use the bridge simultaneously. All it now needs is its suspension wires to be installed, then it can be put into place.

The river will be closed to navigation whilst the lifting operation is taking place and the bridge fixed in position.
