For some while now I have remained silent, writes Brian Cavill.
Despite, what in my opinion is a continuous onslaught of negativity about the state and management of our great national asset the canal network.
While I agree that its not in great condition, particularly the northern regions, in my 'neck of the woods' the ring of Staffs & Worcester, Trent & Mersey and Shropshire Union, its not been too bad.
Yes I know there have been recent water shortages, aggravated by leaky locks, and fallen trees but I recently navigated that ring over five weeks without much problem.
It must be appreciated that the finances of this country aren't in a great state for complex reasons and any government could not justify pouring more money into what amounts to a leisure industry unless it benefited the country as a whole.
Surely things like the NHS, social care and more recently defence should have priority. Lets face it there is plenty of money in narrowboating, just look at the full marinas and how much they charge. Not to mention the price of new boats and there still selling.
The problem is that the money is not where it should be, maintaining the system. Maybe C&RT could somehow find a way extracting some of this.
While I agree that C&RT have made some questionable decisions about selling off property and assets and using inexperienced contractors, they are wrestling with very limited finances. Hopefully under new leadership and accumulated experience, things will improve, but I cant see them getting any new money any time soon.
As for anybody embarking on a new narrowboat adventure, I would say don't be put off. Yes I agree that the television portrayal is typical of the way the media present anything with clever editing, nice music and constantly trying to engage the audience for the advertisers but as we all know the reality can be somewhat different.
I personally embarked on a new adventure last year to fit out a sail-away at the age of 72 so I'm not quitting the canals yet. Beats going to work 9-5!
In summary life ain't perfect and nor is the canal system but there is challenges and fun to be had there!
