Anderton Boat Lift closed for 12 days

ANDERTON Boat Lift is to be closed from 21st June to 2nd July—12 days in all.

The reason is a leaking caisson that requires sealing to prevent further water leakage, Keith Gudgin reports.

Leaking for some time

However this has been leaking for some time, with Canal & River Trust telling that it was planned for replacement as part of the works programme scheduled for February next year.

During the work the lift will of course be out of operation, with the trust admitting how 'frustrating and disruptive this is for our customers, with the number of other stoppages in the region'.

It also told that if the lift keeps operating it is very likely that the seals will fail completely later in the season resulting in a longer closure.

Discuss plans

Those boaters who have booked to use the lift during the closure period are asked to contact the booking office and discuss their plans.

The problem however is that these days works all too often go over time, even though it is told that the teams will work seven days a week to get the problem fixed.
