A WOMAN was pulled from the Kennet & Avon Canal in Devizes yesterday (Thursday) and rushed to hospital.

However, the woman in her 60's was later pronounced dead at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon being in a serious condition, Alan Tilbury reports.

In difficulties

A towpath walker saw the woman in difficulties and called the emergency services, with personnel pulling her from the water at 10.30am.

Despite efforts by rescuers and paramedics to save her life when they had her on the towpath, she was later pronounced dead.

Trying everything

The person who called the emergency told the Gazette & Herald:

“I've just witnessed all the emergency services trying everything to resuscitate this woman.  They did not stop from the second they pulled her out.  First, the fire service and the police until the paramedics arrived.

“Twenty to 30 minutes later they were still trying.  We've watched in awe at their determination.  Her family should know the emergency services have done everything to revive her and protect her dignity at this horrible time.”
