The river banks are still there

WHEN Victor Swift quoted the Saturday Times in his column, perhaps he should also have pointed out Rose Wild's comment, writes James Henry.

In her feedback column she commented on something that must annoy many boaters, that all too often used phrase by the television people and Press writers (that know no better) that the river 'burst its banks'.  As she related this is nothing more than journalistic hyperbole.

Banks still intact

She pointed out that when the river eventually recedes from their flood plains (what they are there for) the banks will be still intact.

I am pleased to relate that I have never seen this 'burst its banks' phrase in your publication, though alas I have in those of Canal & River Trust, that really should know better.
