THE original planned work on the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme that was to close the Aire & Calder Navigation from today (15th February) to 19th June, has been scrapped.
The work was being undertaken on behalf of Leeds City Council at Knostrop Flood Lock (3) at Hunslet on the navigation, and would result in its closure for four months, Keith Gudgin tells us.
Minimising the disruption
However, Canal & River Trust customer representatives have been working closely with Leeds City Council and its contractor to look at ways of minimising the disruption from the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme.
The council have now advised that a two week closure 'window' for the removal of the crane from Fearns Island at Crown Point and testing of the weirs at Leeds and Knostrop is required from the 17 July to the 30 July, which is a significant improvement on the original proposal.
The work Leeds City Council are undertaking is an important part of the Leeds Flood Alleviation Scheme. Its aim is to protect about 3,000 domestic properties and 500 businesses in the Aire corridor.
