IT IS regretted but we inadvertently stated that the boat trips would be longer after work on the Grantham Canal, but this is not so!
Chairman of the Grantham Canal Society, Mike Stone, tells us that the work involved removing weed growth and so extended the profile of the navigable channel which has permitted faster transit by our trip-boat—The Three Shires.
Tortoise could travel faster!
'Before anyone says that we shouldn't target speed,' adds Mike, 'the restricted channel in a cutting slowed movement down so much that any self-respecting tortoise could travel faster along the towpath than the craft did in the water! Our visitors can now enjoy a cruise without the feeling that they were never to see home again! The navigable length of the canal remains the same at about 4.5 miles.'
The Society offers two, three and four hours charter cruises for up to ten people from our Woolsthorpe base along the level length towards the A1 near Grantham. Once the current work to restore Locks 15 to 12 is completed we hope to offer a new range of cruises heading in the opposite direction towards Redmile.
Guided tours
We welcome all visitors who, if they wish, can also have a guided tour (usually on Mondays to Fridays by appointment) of the restoration work which is currently nearing completion at Lock 15 that has been substantially rebuilt with work undertaken by GCS volunteers occasionally assisted by several WRG camping weeks.
