THE Canal & River Trust tells us that there is too much rubbish dumped in or on the towpaths of the canals in Birmingham, that is costing £100,000 to clear.

There are hundreds of car tyres, and even cars themselves—and a burnt-out mini-bus dumped in the canals of the city as well as masses of household rubbish, traffic cones and the like.

Trust to clear-up

The picture by Harry Cornwall shows numerous bags of rubbish dumped on the canal steps of the canal bridge at Ettingshall, that is left for the Trust to clear up.

The mini-bus was discovered one morning burnt-out half in the water of Wednesbury Oak Loop, and needed a major—and expensive—operation to remove it.

Cars too are often pushed into canals, with one completely blocking the Wyrley & Essington Canal in Wednesfield, that needed a crane to remove it.

Samantha Bucknall, 'spokesman' for the Trust, complained:

"It's got to the stage where enough is enough, this rubbish is someone else's legal responsibility."

But no one seems to want to take responsibility, and the perpetrators seems to get away with it.
