The body of an 11 years old boy was dragged from the  Fitzwilliam Canal in Parkgate at Rotherham last night (Thursday) at around 11pm after a search operation.

The Fitzwilliam Canal is a short spur off the South Yorkshire Navigation near Rotherham, and it was the South Yorkshire Police that were alerted to a boy seen entering the water  at around 7pm yesterday, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Investigation under way

It was later that the body of the boy was discovered by the police and dragged from the water, with an investigation now under way into how he came to be in the canal.

There is an unconfirmed  report stating he entered the canal to retrieve a shoe then disappeared, with the emergency services being alerted and a search organised.
