I WOULD like to thank James Henry for pointing out that I have been in 'GRP land'; there were very few out on the water all the way from Leicester to Shardlow. It is also wide beam land and there were a few of those out and about, writes Kevin McNiff.

I didn't have any problems with the cruiser, rather I was glad to be of assistance when they asked very specific questions. Realising they were inexperienced, the suggestion to stay on quieter waters was more out of a hope they kept safe. I have no experience of outboard motors and was not able to offer any help with that bit and I didn't ask if they had an anchor?

Advice offered?

I don't know what advice river marinas offer to their berth holders, but maybe an indication such as the lights at Shardlow flood gates and Barrow Deep Lock would be relevant. That said, the skipper has the final say.

Trips along the Soar and Trent will not feature too many times on our cruise plans and I hope everyone who takes to the waters on sunny and benign days has a really good and safe time!
