Canal & River Trust is the new name

Published: Thursday, 06 October 2011

IT HAS today (Thursday 6th October) been announced that the new name for the charity taking over from British Waterways will be Canal & River Trust.

We are told the decision has been taken following extensive public and internal consultation and market research into the replacement for the name and symbol of British Waterways.

New logo

There will also be a new logo, shown above, that was designed by the agency Pentagram, that produced the original logo some 20 years ago.  However this means that the entire signage will now have to be replaced over the whole system, but it is possible that 'local kits' will be supplied, to lessen the costs.

The new organisation will be called Glandwr Cymru in Wales, that translates literally as Waterside Wales, that reflects a determination by transition trustees that the trust has a distinctly Welsh character  for its waterways in Wales.  However, the name British Waterways will remain in Scotland.

Expected to launch

We are told that the Canal & River Trust is expected to launch in April 2012, and 'the waterways also provide a unique haven for wildlife, offering distinctive local tranquillity to some 13 million visitors every year'.

However, we must point out that British Waterways told the Parliamentary Waterways Group  that there were 3.8m visitors to the waterways during 2010.

Our David Hymers points out the abbreviation—CART!  Or he asks, should it be CRUST?
