Floating pennywort in the Lee

THE invasive weed floating pennywort has now invaded the Lee Navigation, with volunteers attempting to get rid of the fast growing plant.

The work was organised by the water charity Thames21, with its people spending a full day pulling the plant out of the river, and making sure none was left, as even a small piece can quickly multiply as was found on the Leicester Section of the Grand Union Canal, pictured.

Campaign

The charity has now launched the Love The Lee campaign to rejuvenate the river and appealed for volunteers to get involved with the clean-up, with Theo Thomas, of Thames21, complaining:

This river is the most polluted and degenerated in the UK and we're very keen that this stops and becomes a river that residents can be proud of."

The next clean-up will be on 6th August, and anyone interested in taking part should contact Vicky D'souza on This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
