THE HOLE IN THE ROOF OF Bath No 1 Tunnel, will close the navigation for months.

The hole was caused by workmen digging the foundations in October of a road above the tunnel, that broke through its roof with debris falling in, Keith Gudgin reports.

Not known how safe

As it was not known how safe the tunnel was after this, the navigation was closed on the Kennet & Avon, that has left boaters marooned in their craft at both sides of the stoppage, that is particularly bad for any stuck on the Avon, as the river tends to flood.

But now it is not known how long the navigation will be closed, as all we are told is that Bath & North East Somerset Council has confirmed that investigations and assessments into the repairs required are continuing.

In addition to the navigation being closed, there are now traffic lights on the A36 Beckford Road as the hole in the tunnel roof has caused part of the road to be closed.

Working closely together

As to the future, the council, Canal & River Trust, Historic England and the contractor are working closely together to carry out surveys, further investigation and design work.

Necessary approvals need to be secured before permanent repairs can begin.

Repairing the canal tunnel is complex because it is an historic structure, so it is anticipated work could continue into 2027.
