I was interested to read that BSS are interested in lithium iron batteries fitted to narrowboats, writes Brian Cavill.

Having just successfully completed the  PCA and acquired UKCA conformity for my sail-away I am very aware of issues related to these batteries.

Firstly, only batteries that conform to ISO 23625:2025 can be fitted to new boats.

Secondly it was recommended that the battery should NOT be fitted in the accommodation area due to gassing and overheating in the event of a fault. As far as I was concerned the engine compartment was also unsuitable due to the high ambient temperatures. Also they are not normally completely air-tight sealed from the cabin space.

Since I have a semi traditional design I fitted it into the port side aft locker with a vent to over the side. Its actually inside its own inner casing lined with calcium silicate(usually used for stove fire surrounds).

I am encouraged by the fact that BSS are seriously considering fitment of these batteries since I think the regularity system, installers and manufacturers have some catching up to do!
