THERE IS ONE CERTAIN WAY for boaters to get away from this summer heat.

Take your boat through Standedge Tunnel, Janet Friend reports. (and who has done it both ways!)

Perfect escape

The constant all year temperature is around 8°c. So a trip through Standedge Tunnel provides the perfect escape from the summer heat.

The Canal & River Trust is hosting celebrations to mark the 25 years since the reopening after its restoration of the UK's longest, deepest and highest canal tunnel, that was claimed to be the impossible restoration, but it was restored.

The 3.25 miles long tunnel is between  Marsden and Diggle Linking West Yorkshire and Lancashire.

Brought back to life

After years of decline and then closure in 1944, the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and Standedge Tunnel were brought back to life through a restoration completed in 2001, at a total cost for the waterway of £32m.

It is available for boaters to have accompanied trips through the whole tunnel or short cruises on the trip boat.
