THE CULVERT THAT WAS discovered collapsed on the Shropshire Union Canal in July is now 'ongoing'.
But will take five months to repair, Keith Gudgin reports.
Collapsed
The culvert was found collapsed between Knolles Bridge 131 and Backford Bridge 133 on the pound between Chester and Ellesmere Port.
It was discovered after a significant loss of water on the pound and the subsequent investigation discovered the broken culvert.
The collapsed section of the culvert has now been fully repaired and relined with a new in-situ pipe that has been installed along its entire length.
Work is however continuing to the inlet and outlet structures to seal the new pipe securely in place, then work will continue in reinstating the canal bed and completing the wash-wall repairs.
No unforeseen issues
But this will take until the end of the year, with the waterway expected to reopen on 12th December, subject of course to no unforeseen issues arising during the final stages of the work.
It having taken from the 17th July to the 12th December—five months.
