I was most surprised to learn that coir rolls were back in favour, writes Jo Deaken.

CoirRochdaleIt was way back in 2016 that I agreed with another of your corespondents who was complaining that coir rolls were falling away after being washed-out by the wake of numerous passing boats.

They were used in the Rochdale just out of Manchester, and lasted a few weeks as they were pulled away from the bank and eventually disappeared, until all that was left was a few spikes.

(Our picture shows the coir rolls at Newton Heath on the Rochdale Canal before they were washed away completely.)

Then there were those on the Shroppie that are no more.

But those now inserted in the bank in Nottingham won't last too long, for there are wide beams navigating from the Trent to the Soar and vice versa, that will soon have them in a mess with their wakes and props. churning up the water.

Just another waste of time and cash for the insects, that can well look after themselves with so much vegetation surrounding the waterways.
