Vandalism on the Erewash Canal

VANDALISM on the waterway nowadays is something of a thing of the past, but alas not on the Erewash Canal.

Vandals have been deliberately draining the pounds to such an extend that boats have sustained damage.

Anti-vandal locks destroyed

The problem being caused by many of the anti-vandal locks fitted to the paddles on the waterway having been destroyed over the years, with very few now in workable condition thus allowing the vandals to easily drain the pounds.

This time it is the pound between Shipley Lock to Eastwood Lock that is affected with boats grounded.

The pound has now been filled and the boats floated, but the Trust must take blame for allowing so many of the anti-vandal locks being broken over the years and not repaired.
