Celebrating 250 years of Coventry Basin

THERE is to be a free event at Coventry Basin to celebrate the anniversary of the first coal boats coming to Coventry.

coventry basinThe first coal boats arrived in 1769 at the basin, with this being celebrated tomorrow, Saturday, marking 250 years of a Coventry Canal in the city, Alan Tilbury reports.

Coventry Canal Society

The event will be from 10am to 4pm organised by the Coventry Canal Society, and will include canoeing, boats, entertainment and street art together with a display of Riley cars.

This anniversary will mark the opening of the canal, constructed by James Brindley, to bring coal from the Warwickshire coalfields to midlands industry.
