NOTWITHSTANDING that Canal & River Trust proudly told us that the Leeds & Liverpool Canal would be open today—it isn't!

Today was to be the day after the long closure of the waterway over the summer that it was at last to be opened, with all the locked flights being unchained and open once more for navigation, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Suspected vandalism

But it was not to be, for the flight at Blackburn is closed, we are informed due to a suspected act of vandalism with damage caused to the top lock, though we are not told what damage, only that investigations are being carried out.
