Fire closes Trent & Mersey

A FIRE by the Trent & Mersey Canal in Stoke resulted in the canal being closed yesterday.

THE fire was at a mixed waste scrapyard at Middleport and of such intensity that it required a number of appliances to control Keith Gudgin tells us.

Toxic fumes

It was not only smoke but toxic fumes that were given off, with police touring the area with loudspeakers telling people to keep all windows and doors closed and not to venture out into the fumes.

This meant that both the canal and towpath near the blaze had to be closed all day, and there is as yet no intimation as to whether either has reopened.
