May I just correct this; it is perfectly possible by putting a longer boat in on the diagonal We have done this several times with a 60ft boat taking great care of course.
We have used the same method with badly leaking locks going down the Wigan Flight and also going up to Sheffield sometimes easier than central positioning on the shorter broad locks.
