Lancaster Canal re-opens

THE Lancaster Canal that was closed near the Lune Aqueduct during June has now been re-opened after its repair.

It was an 800 yards length of waterway that was closed after it sprung a leak, which was found to be quite extensive, needing a major repair.

Worked week-ends

Canal & River Trust engineers and contractors have worked week-ends to repair the three substantial holes in the canal bed in order to re-open the waterway as quickly as possible, and have done so three days ahead of  schedule.

Over last weekend the canal was re-filled with a small amount of water and inspected to ensure there were no air pockets or further leaks and then water levels were gradually restored to navigation.

In total 480 tonnes of clay were required to fill in the three holes along a 22 yards section of the canal, bringing the bed of the canal up to its original height.
