Two more closures

TWO more waterway closures have been reported—the Kennet & Avon and the Aylesbury Arm of the Grand Union Canal, Keith Gudgin tells us.

Once again the flight down to the Avon in Bath is closed, this time caused by a 'boat strike' at Pulteney Gardens Lock (12).

There is damage to the gate, gate collar and gate anchor, leaving the lock unusable, so the waterway is closed for safety reasons and will not be re-opened until the damage can be assessed and repaired.

Balance beam

Aylesbury Arm locks 1 and 2 are closed—again. This time due to the failure of a balance beam on Lock 2, that has made the gate unsafe to operate, with Trust staff removing the broken section of balance beam.

Boats will be allowed through tomorrow, Monday, with staff operating the lock, but only at 9am, 12pm and 4pm. As a new balance beam will have to be manufactured, there is no information as to whether there will be further openings until repaired.

Update: Staff will be on hand to open the lock gates, but a new balance beam is having to be made.
