Not only BW buying marinas

BRITISH Waterways is not the only company buying up marinas, as the company Lakeland Leisure is also snapping them up.

It has now purchased both Great Haywood Marina (pictured) on the Trent & Mersey Canal and Tattenhall Marina on the Shropshire Union Canal, Alan Tilbury tells us.

Knock-down price

These two marinas add to its ownership of Saul Marina, built at the end of the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal, that did not reach its expected popularity. It is understood that Lakeland has acquired the marinas at a knock-down price as an investment whilst the marina business is in the doldrums.

Great Haywood Marina is at the junction of the Trent & Mersey Canal and the Staffordshire & Worcestershire Canal.  Tattenhall Marina is a few miles above the junction of the Shropshire Union Canal and the Middlewich Branch.

Encourage farmers

All three marinas were built in the last few years in response to the team set up by British Waterways to encourage farmers and the like to built marinas as an investment.

Alas, they are proving everything but.
