Daventry Canal again

STILL another attempt is being made to build a canal into Daventry, with an application for planning permission to be submitted later this month.

This plan to have a canal into a proposed basin in the town, surrounded by new development, with a connection to the Grand Union Canal by Braunston Tunnel has been off and on for quite a while.

New association

We gave the news last month of a new association being formed to further promote this two miles arm, though cash is not yet forthcoming.

It is all part of Daventry District Council's master plan for town centre redevelopment, and it is the council that is going ahead with the scheme notwithstanding its own poll showed that local people were very much against it, worried that the estimated £11 millions needed would fall on ratepayers.

A spokesman for The Daventry Canal Association admitted that  'Obviously, this is a difficult time in which to develop a new canal, with councils being short of funds, and development companies wary of making commitments', but 'volunteer resources' will make it happen.
