A RESTORATION PROJECT on the Montgomery Canal is being supported by a grant.

SchoolhouseBridgeThis is from the Shared Prosperity Fund, to fund the restoration between the recently completed Schoolhouse Bridge (pictured) and Malthouse Bridge and will include the winter environmental programme.

Dug out

The filled-in section will be dug out to provide the channel and restoration of the towpath.

Tree roots have already been removed and an overgrown hedge has been trimmed back to its original line.

The winter environmental programme that includes hedge laying and planting, has already started, with a group of five corporate volunteers from Aico in Oswestry clearing and preparing the area.

The team is expecting more Aico volunteers for next month’s work party.

This work will involve felling trees at or below the future water level which have grown up since the channel eventually emptied of water several decades ago.

Council leader

Shropshire Council leader, Councillor Heather Kidd, visited the canal with other senior councillors to view the restored sections and the current work site.

She expressed her gratitude to the organisers and volunteers, saying the visit helped her and her colleagues understand the scope of restoration efforts in Shropshire.

This restoration work is expected to continue until March next year.
