THE SEVERN'S FISH PASS at Diglis Island on the river has had around 6,500 visitors this year.

This Fish Pass is the only underwater river viewing deck in England, has now closed for the year, Janet Friend reports.

It has held drop-ins throughout the year, where visitors and moored boaters can view fish through the glass window in the café, with Mark Miles, visitor services manager from the Canal & River Trust, explaining:

"The visitors really enjoy what we are offering, and there is a huge excitement when they see fish in the window. Even on the days when there aren’t any fish, because our volunteers are so enthusiastic and knowledgeable, everybody comes out telling us how fantastic it is and how much they love what we have done here.

"As well as our 90 minute tours and Fish Pass drop-ins, we have done our photography experience, which has gone down well, and a tour explaining trade on the river and the importance of it in the 19th century, which leads into why the weirs were put in.

"With the viewing area closing, the Canal & River Trust has been working hard to find other ways of getting more visitors year-round, leading to the launch of the pop-up cafes."

The café does proper bean-to-cup coffee, hot chocolate, cold drinks, ice creams, muffins, and cookies, we are told.
