COWLING Swing Bridge (121) in finally back in operation on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal after three weeks.

CowlingIt was on the 2nd of July that the brdge failed 'due to damage', then it was discovered it had dropped significantly and had to be mechanically moved back into position, Keith Gudgin reports.

Twisted and corroded beams

Then after inspection by engineers it was discovered its failure was due to twisted and corroded beams under the bridge deck.

As this repair was to take some time a window of passage was given on the 8th and 11th at 10am for boats stuck at the stoppage, otherwise there was no access, until it was reopened today—Friday.
