Thames used for building material deliveries

THE new Port of Tilbury2 is to include the country's largest construction materials terminal for boat haulage on the Thames.

The new terminal on the north bank of the Thames will allow materials to be transported along the river to building sites in central London, Roger Fox reports.

Processing and manufacturing facilities

Tarmac is building new aggregate processing and manufacturing facilities including an asphalt and ready-mix concrete plant at the new port terminal.

The aim is to bypass the congested roads of the city and use an alternative transportation method for the movement of materials, using the Thames as a means of importing aggregates and other bulk materials into London.

It is expected that the new £200m Port of Tilbury terminal will be in operation by the end of next year.
