Too much water closes Llangollen Canal

THE worry these days is too little water closing canals, but the downpour this week has been too much for the Llangollen.

It is currently closed between Thomasons Bridge (22) near Wrenbury and Marbury Lock, where water from the fields has encroached the waterway, Keith Gudgin reports.

Structural failure

This excess of water, it has been discovered, has caused structural failure to the wash wall of the lock and damaged both the embankment and towpath.

The section is being dewatered to allow investigation, with the section obviously closed.

However as the Llangollen supplies water to the reservoir at Hurleston, this repair will be undertaken rather quickly.
