Damaged bridge closes canal

A VEHICLE damaging Hapton Bridge on the Leeds & Liverpool Canal has resulted in its closure.

The vehicle dislodged part of the masonry of the bridge which fell into the canal and towpath, and so must be cleared and the amount of damage to the bridge assessed.

It is expected that the bridge, which spans the waterway in the village West of Burnley, will need emergency repairs, so there is no intimation of the length of the closure, though British Waterways will issue an update next week.
