Two months clean-up

A MASSIVE two months clean up is now underway on the Dublin canals at a cost of €1 million.

This will include both the Royal and Grand canals and is scheduled to be completed ahead of the reopening of the Royal Canal to boats next year.

Waterways Ireland is overseeing the €1 million project which is involving dredging both canals to clear them of rubbish and excess silt, and started in early November.

Disruption

The work is due to finish by the end of the year and there is expected to be some intermittent disruption to traffic caused by lorries transporting the debris from the canals as it is not feasible to transport by water.

The Grand Canal is navigable but is becoming more and more difficult to cruise owing to the build-up of debris.
