A MAN had to be rescued from the Leeds & Liverpool Canal in Wigan after he leaped into the waterway and then could not get out.

The man was drunk and after being seen arguing with his wife took off to the canal and leaped in, and it required the emergency services to get him out of the water, Alan Tilbury reports.

Intoxicated

He was so intoxicated that he could not pull himself out and was clinging to the bank, but luckily others had followed him and contacted the emergency services, being unable to drag him out the bank being steep.

Fire fighters, police and paramedics attended the incident with a ladder being lowered into the water and the man eventually helped out.  He was by then suffering hypothermia and was taken to hospital for treatment.
