RAIN IS DESPERATELY NEEDED INDEED as six more navigations were closed yesterday, Monday.
Erewash Canal
With some canals, like the Erewash, now having two sections closed through lack of water.
It now being closed between Stanton Lock 65 and Hallam Fields Lock 66, in addition to already being closed between locks 71 to 72.
Rochdale Canal
Another with a further closure is the Rochdale Canal, with the pounds between Lock 9 and Lock 12 due to low water levels.
This already has a stoppage through lack of water on the 8th of this month between locks 25 and 30.
Llangollen Canal
Yet another canal with an extra stoppage is the LLangollen Canal, its Baddiley Flight being closed at locks 1 to 3.
This follows the stoppage of Hurleston Flight three days ago through lack of water, it being needed to supply Hurleston Reservoir that supplies two towns with water.
Hertford Union Canal
There are low water levels on the Hertford Union Canal, Top Lock, Lock 1 to Bottom Lock Lock 3. It is told that a navigation closure is required to maintain wider network water levels.
Sheffield & Tinsley Canal
The Tinsley Flight is closed due to low water levels.
While water levels are showing slight signs of improvement, they have not yet recovered sufficiently to allow safe navigation and remain below the level required for passage.
Huddersfield Narrow Canal
The entire west of the waterway from its start to the tunnel is now closed to navigation due to lack of water. This means from Lock 1W right to Lock 32W Standedge Tunnel entrance is closed to navigation.
It was originally closed from Lock 7W to Lock 21W last Friday, but the continuing low water levels resulting from the recent dry weather conditions have now extended this to the whole length to the tunnel.
Desperate situation
This in indeed a desperate situation with six closure in one day through lack of water, and obviously until we get heavy rainfall it can only get worse.
It is indeed a worrying time for those attempting to take cruises.
